Why can't I play Video games for any length of time anymore? Am I old? Can anyone relate?

by Classico42. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

I wish I could take 17 years off my age, I just can't get into much of anything anymore, especially for any period of time. I still enjoyed games for long periods as a 14yo/15yo.

Me: Looks at large Steam Library, and hard drives. Nothing sounds good. "Okay maybe this one." Play for 20 minutes, the inevitable death knell thought of "I'm not sure I'm having fun" runs through my head and bam, I know I won't be loading it again anytime soon. "Well, okay, I enjoyed this other one." Rinse and repeat.

I've spent at least 5x more hours modding Skyrim than I've ever played it. My Steam account says I've played it for 53hrs. I bought it on release day. I was 23. I'll spend three days getting a nice modded install of Oblivion working and I get out of the dungeon and I'm just "Well, that was fun." I'll do this several times a year, because now the mods are deprecated and have since been improved. This goes for anything worth modding. Fallout New Vegas, Stardew, the aforementioned Skyrim, etc.

If there was a hunger/survival mechanic and something that makes money mean something added to SDV I'd go through the long process of modding it to my optimal setup again and giving it another go. After the first playthrough you realise by the end of the first or the second year you have more money than you know what to do with, and you have your spouse. So why am I still playing exactly? Love this game to death though, I put a crap tonne of hours into it.

Question about instant gaming security measures (ID), getting paranoid

by fpgdoto. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

So hello everyone, about some time ago (a year or so) I bought a game from them, they asked a photo of my ID with only my name, surname and their site visible on the screen, so I did, painted everything out with my phone in black and sent them the picture, since then I bought about 15 items and all worked, but in the last couple of days I got a bit paranoid thinking what they could do with the picture I've sent(even tho basically everything apart from the name and surname is not visible), I contacted them saying if they could delete it, they said that the picture was deleted long ago, they used it to confirm my purchase and my account and then deleted it automatically and they cannot click on the document anymore, I can't click on the document anymore either in the chat with them.

Do you think I'm fine and I shouldn't worry? Hopefully I get some answers, I'm getting really paranoid :(

I'm sorry if I broke some rules

Beakman's World Episode Where Lester Rips a Phone Book in Half

by FriendJosh. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

So I went on a bit of a internet scavenger hunt this morning to try to find the original episode of Beakman's World that Arin referenced in their Kirby's Dream World playthrough, and by complete coincidence, someone literally uploaded the episode to YouTube less than 24 hours ago. The phone book section starts at around 10 minutes in. https://youtu.be/DIEnB9W8xCc

A reasonable question regarding Epic's freebies - Discussion

by welovepolice. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

How is it possible for Epic, with one game's revenue (which is free to play) to pay all these games for millions of people? Ok, I know the skins/V-bucks is their income, but the amount of their profit from Fortnite seems insanely high and is enough to buy all these freebies they gave away. It's insane.

Huge interview with N0tail about the new OG squad, his future in esports and teambuilding process

by Machinae291. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

Heya there, last week I had a pleasure to talk with n0tail about many different topics. The original text was in russian, but an incredible Sam aka canihearawahoo of OG's Discord Server translated the whole thing, so I thought I'd share the link.

I've already done that earlier today, but it had only a terrible google translate version, this one's a much better one.

All credits for the translation go to Sam from OG's discord, all credits for being such an incredible interlocutor go to Johan.

Here's the pdf file

Does the Turtle Beach USB Stream Microphone work in Xbox Parties with friends?

by ThePowerChord. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

Im quite desperate to upgrade my voice quality in parties but don’t want to utilise the Xbox app due to its lack of ease of access.

So does it work with plugging the Turtle Beach USB Stream Mic straight into the USB ports on the Xbox One?

Some "Free Levels"/Game Calculations

by reallyreallylongname. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

I saw Valve's "2% more free levels" post and thought, like many people, that that statistic was very misleading in that most people are likely playing more Dota due to the quarantine. So I figured I would do some back-of-the-envelope math based on available statistics to try and figure out how many free levels people are gaining per game compared to last year.

To start, visiting https://dota.rgp.io/historic/ show us that there were 1,071,862 matches on May 30, 2020. If we look at a comparable point in time relative to the May 7, 2019 release date of last year's battle pass, we see there were 812,866 matches on May 13, 2019.

So there are more matches being played this year compared to the same point last year, but to know if the average player is playing more we also need total unique player counts. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find those statistics, but I was able to find peak concurrent player counts by month at https://steamcharts.com/app/570#All . I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that peak concurrent player counts are linearly correlated with total unique players, so I believe we can get a meaningful result using these numbers. Looking at the table, we can see that the peak player count on May 30, 2020 was 789,594. Unfortunately we don't have an exact number for May 13, but if you zoom in and assume the extrapolation between the dates where measurements were take are close to correct (which it likely is), we can see on May 13 the peak concurrently players is probably still very close to the \~1,000,000 that it was at at the end of April. Let's be a little generous and assume 950,000 (lower numbers are more generous to Valve here, as lower player counts mean higher games/player in 2019).

Take 'x' to be the ratio between total unique players and peak concurrent players. Assuming x remains constant between 2019 and 2020, then we get 1,071,862x/789,594 = 1.36x games/day for the average player in 2020, and 812,866x/950,000 = 0.86x games/day for the average player in 2019. Then we can look at their ratio and have 'x' cancel: (1.36x/0.86x) = 1.58, and we see that the average player in 2020 is playing 58% more games per day than the average player in 2019. Taking valve's claim of 2% more free levels, we can see that at this point in time compared to last year, players have gotten 1.02/1.58 = 0.65 free levels per game compared to last year. A whopping 35% fewer levels per game.

Of course there are tons of assumptions in here so I might be full of shit, but if this logic holds then the Battle Pass certainly has larger problems than "65% more sideshop gold from recycling" can fix. And this is just players' ability to gain levels - the overall efficacy of levels is lower (supposedly, I haven't done that math here) due to treasures being farther apart and very rares having a lower drop rate.

TL;DR: By my certainly-not-bulletproof logic/math, players are receiving 35% fewer levels/game than last year.

What game did you really like but were reluctant to play it at first because it is not the genre you usually would enjoy?

by Aleksis111. Posted on Jun 05, 2020

As an avid player of World of Warcraft i tried out Hearthstone at the time when it released but after a month of infrequent play i realized i don’t enjoy it all that much and that i’d rather play more “serious” games

Two or three years later i had an urge to try it again only to feel that i am too behind everyone because of expansion content. The prices on those expansions also have always seemed stupidly high.

The time i did play hearthstone i always resented just how much resources i would need to create a deck, and how little dust disenchanting gave you.

The game that changed my opinion about card games was Legends of Runeterra which Riot released like last month which i find a ton of fun.

Runeterra’s reward system is set up in a fun way, you have 6 regions which have different playstyles and in your deck you are able to use cards from two different regions.

You “activate” a region which to gain xp for and when you level up you get a region reward which becomes better as you gain more levels, you are able to switch regions at any time if you’d like

Runeterra eliminates the dislike of deck crafting that Hearthstone built up in me as some rewards do not give you a certain card but the ability to craft the card of the rarity that dropped be that common or legendary. This is a game changer as building decks is way easier.

Of course you are able to buy card packs but you are very much able to get everything through playing for free. There is a post on r/LegendsofRuneterra where a person has been playing since beta without buying anything has all of the possible cards and THAT IS OKAY.

The cap is achievable by super dedicated free to play players which is a minority of the general playerbase and those who have gotten that far sure as hell are not going to quit just because they have everything.

edit:fixed runterra->runeterra
