Thank you again for everyone who answered my questions about Fury of Dracula earlier this past week. The game arrived today and I played it with some of my friends. It seems really fun, I wouldn't know because I lost the game (as Dracula) during the first week.
For anyone who doesn't know it is a deduction game where the hunters try and pick up your trail as you move around Europe in secret turning people into vampires and such to take over. Normally this takes some degree of effort and planning on the part of the hunters. Normally.
In my game we were on Wednesday of the first week, so Turn 3 overall. The hunters have moved some and supplied themselves some, though have not picked up ANY part of my trail as they are in the greater continental Europe while I decided to start in the UK.
One of them just randomly goes, "I bet he started in the UK. It's off the beaten path and he wouldn't expect us to just randomly go there." Mind you none of us have ever played this game before. Yikes, ok, that was random but it's fine, they're not near the UK I can be long gone if they decide to investigate it.
Next players turn, "I use my event card, it lets me pick any two cities in the world and if they're in your trail you have to reveal them. I wanna see if you're in the UK." Double yikes, that's really not good. But ok let's not be hasty there's like 6 locations in the UK there's still a chance he won-
"My first choice is Liverpool."
I was currently in Liverpool.
There are like 50 different cities on the map and while the reason they thought I could have been in the UK was sound there were plenty of other corners I could have started in. So I have been revealed almost immediately to say this is catastrophic is an understatement. None of the hunters have any damage, they are now moving to box in the port cities and I have 0 event cards of my own because they've been lucky enough to never draw one during the night phase.
Alright this is very bad but the game isn't over yet, I can try and slip the net. I came from the north of the UK and I can't go back so I have to take to the English Channel, from there I can go to one of two seas and they can't know which one for sure so they'll have to spread wide to try and intercept me and that will be my chance to slip the net. In fact, once I make landfall I can use my Mislead power to remove that sea card from my trail and that way they'll never be able to confirm which way I we-
"Ok I use Money Trail, it lets me reveal one sea card, I pick the one you're currently on."
When it rains it pours. Alright. Again, I cannot go backward so I am stuck in the North Sea and forced to make landfall. At this point, only one of the hunters is close enough to intercept me but there are two ports I could have landed at, he has to guess the correct one.
Do I even need to say it?
Combat ensues. Alright, it's just one of them and its night time if I can resolve Escape as Bat I can fly two spaces away and make a break for it!
"I use my event card at the start of combat, it lets me move several spaces and if I can reach you I can join the combat."
He could, alright 2v1. It's ok though since it's still early in the game my Pride ability isn't active yet and I can immediately attempt escape. They both play cards so I have to pick which one to fight, I do, and attempt escape as bat. They both flip over Holy Circle, a card that automatically counters any card I play no matter what. I never had a chance. The rest of the hunters pile in and finish me off just before the end of the first week.
It was quite a first game to be sure, one I will not forget! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little salty, but I can laugh at myself too. I could have played better at the end but by that point, I felt obliged to lean into the absurdity. Thanks again for advising me about the game guys, I wanted to share the ridiculous story of what came of it!
