Games with awesome story

Hi guys

Haven't played many games for long time. Liked max Payne 2 and mafia 2 back in the day. Really enjoyed gta v story and gaming experience.

Any similar suggestions? Not interested in fantasy ones like witcher .

kaisergav 1

Spec Ops: The Line for an interesting story/philosophy in an otherwise straightforward modern military shooter.

Combatical 1

I wasnt interested in the witcher either but Im so happy I did. Best story/gaming experience I've played in the past 10 years.

ninjaweedman 1

grand theft auto V and im sure you will love read dead redemption 2 as well.

CardLighter 1

Firewatch on Steam. It’s a basic game, but pretty cool mystery story to it. About 5 hour game play :)

Wolf8312 1

Detroit: become human. Not my type of game usually (I usually insist on being able to shoot something) but it is just such an immersive universe with such an intriguing philosophical story and believable characters that I was almost instantly hooked. It makes life is strange look like an episode of Neighbors back in the 80’s.

I’m a female robot trapped in an abusive home, being ordered around like a doormat, cooking and cleaning for this fat slob and loving every minute of it, because I couldn’t help feeling so utterly immersed in the situation!

Playing in 4K as well, the graphics look better than reality itself does!

CardLighter 2

Definitely one of the coolest games I’ve played, I got so immersed in the character and tried to do the right thing! Worth a another play through!

Wolf8312 1

I know right! I picked up that and Titanfall 2, and I think it's the first steam sale in a long time, where I seem to have picked a couple of winners!

DBH is especially astounding because unlike games like Life is strange which are understandably cheesy and low budget, everything in DBH feels of a quality tantamount to a big budget movie, everything from the voice acting and animations, to the dialogue and characterization seems flawless, and sucks you right into its universe.

Even the fact one is playing as a robot makes the limitations such games always suffer from appear more seamless and more understandable as you are just following your programming.

Makes me hopeful for the future of the industry.

CardLighter 1

I read somewhere on reddit that the company opted out to make a DBH 2 for some reason, so redditors being themselves, created a petition to do so 😂😂

Started quantum break. Wow!

Control and rdr2 are on list now

EyesOfaCreeper 1

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

Anton-Slavik 1

Planescape: Torment.

carecats 1

Fallout New Vegas

Control has a great story and is a ton of fun to play. It is a sci-fi/fantasy/surreal game though.

Jedi Fallen Order has a good story and great gameplay.

NinjaMayCry 1

I love how everybody how just name drops all sorts of games without giving any context to why they like said games stories

The Cat Lady

Gemini Rue had a good one.

computerswow 1

Hmm I'd say fallout 1 but I think you are looking for more of an action game? Based on the games listed, you like movie style story. I'd say the last of us if you have PlayStation. I really liked SOMA but that is very light on the game part.

LeRedditArmieX3 1

A bit of a controversial pick, but I would definitely recommend both Watch_Dogs games if you liked GTA 5.

If you have a friend to couch co-op with, you NEED to play "A Way Out". It's a cinematic/movie game where you play as two guys who escape prison together. It might be my favorite "digital experience" of all time.

Also, if you're looking for something that's more of an RPG then check out "Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling". It's a spiritual successor to Paper Mario: TTYD and they blew it out of the park. Amazing story and gameplay.

Gris, Journey and Layers of fear :)

bum_thumper 2

Red. Dead. Redemption. 2.

After playing the Witcher 3 I was so thirsty for a high quality story based game, one that would keep me engaged the entire time like Witcher did. I tried a few other games that just didn't do it for me, and decided to just pay full price for red 2 and take the plunge. The story just hits so hard and so well. Every character is well done, every side mission felt like there was care put into it, and the way the game eases you into it's storyline is just amazing. It all culminates to an ending that actually made me tear up, a first for me in a video game. You get so attatched to the characters, every moment in the campsite feels so real. Sometimes there's an argument going on, sometimes they're playing poker while the girls gossip in the corner, and sometimes everyone is sitting by the campfire drunk as hell and singing a song while you walk away to the shoreline to contemplate it all.

And that ending to the main arc... Wow.

  anoopvk268 1

Cool thanks.

How is the online play?

bum_thumper 1

If you go into it without any expectations, it's not too bad, and can actually be fun if you role play a little. If you go into it expecting the immense amount of things to do and get like in gta5, you'll be severely disappointed. There are a lot more artificial pay walls as you get goes at a very slooow rate, but doing the daily challenges, missions, and competitive stuff frequently will start the trickle. Maybe after a few years if they keep updating it it'll be as in depth as gta5 online, but as it stands there's not as much content. I will say tho, if you go in hoping to just ride around doing occasional stuff here and there, fishing, and (when you have enough gold) the bounty missions, it's pretty relaxing and enjoyable

Shadow_s_Bane 2

Story driven games ? Id say give Dragon Age Origins and Awakening a try, also Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 are excellent.

Also give Star Wars Knights of Old Republic a try, they are fucking excellent.

muzik_dude7 2

Plague Tale

PinkyPonk10 2

Brothers a tale of two sons.

Infrah 2

Metro Redux

boahandcock 2

Bully Scholarship Edition

The_Algerian 2

Mafia 3 also got a good story, but aside from that, it's not a very good game.

Imagine GTA V, but you have to unlock every single main mission by doing a bunch of seriously uninspired side missions.

There's Max Payne 3, which lot better than Max Payne 2, to be honest.

Alan Wake.

Quantum Break, although this one's story is way too complicated for most people.

  anoopvk268 1

Liked the look of quantum break.

How do you compare quantum break and read dead redemption 2 in terms of game play?

Quasimurder 1

Mafia 3 gets a lot of hate but I really enjoyed the setting and the world. There are a few annoying missions (I think that's true of most open world games) but overall it was a fun experience. The story felt like a combination of a 30 for 30 documentary mixed with The Wire.

The_Algerian 1

>There are a few annoying missions

A... FEW?

Mate, I've been playing it for a few days, and this is the first game in my entire life that I decided to uninstall and watch the rest of the story on youtube.

90% of game is nothing but the kind of pointless side missions that litter any Ubisoft open world game, except they're mandatory in Mafia III.

The_Algerian 1

Quantum Break is a lot more frantic, your character gets all kind of sci-fi powers through the game, like slow time, teleport, stuff like that.

You're not really supposed to just stay in cover.

LeRedditArmieX3 3

RDR2 is totally different than Quantum Break in terms of gameplay. RDR2 is somewhat similar to a slow-paced version of GTA5, while QB's gameplay is closer to that of a Call Of Duty/Uncharted campaign - it's a corridor shooter.

This might be unwanted, but if you like the look of QB I would highly recommend "Control" (I'm pretty sure it's from the same studio). Control is newer and has a very good story and better gameplay. It's a third person shooter metroidvania elements.

blackroseMD1 1

Yeah, Alan Wake, Quantum Break and Control are all from Remedy and >!all exist in the same universe!<

Harouto 7

Detroit: Become Human

Zaeem105 3

Arkham series, awesome combat, interesting story and be the batman.

lucksh0t 3

Persona 4, mass effect series, the witcher 3

Helphaer 7

While i wouldn't consider the titles you mentioned to be examples of good or awesome story, the reality is high quality singleplayer story games are rare in the AAA world now.

Taking a look at Star Wars Fallen Order do we consider it a good story or just a good star wars themed game with good gameplay? Do we consider Mass Effect Andromeda a good story game or just a disconnected Mass Effect spin off with better gunplay but stuck in a singleplayer mmo that while it has creative writing, cant actually deliver on depth in its missions and such?

In truth story AAA games are failing but that doesnt mean indies are rising to fill the void, no they've rarely done that and are more a voluminous pit of games with interesting ideas but poor delivery or which people avoid because of disinteresting visuals in the year 2020.

If i were to just state games you should play that the story was of interest in, they wouldn't be many from this year, restricting that away from fantasy almost entirely excludes the entire JRPG genre as well.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided

Fallout 3 with Broken Steel

Fallout New Vegas with optional DLC

Mass Effect 1 and 2 with the Shadow Broker DLC

Tales of the Borderlands

Wolf Among Us

The Walking Dead Season 1 and 2

BioShock 1

Half Life 2 with Episode 1 and 2

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare 1 and 2

Tom Clancy Splinter Cell Double Agent

Star Wars The Old Republic Class Stories

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 with TSLRCM

Alan Wake

Detroit Become Human

Halo 1 through 3.

++ If we were adding fantasy it would include The Witcher 2 and 3, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, and Dragon Age Origins with the Awakening expansion. Also Neverwinter Nights 2 with Mask of the Betrayer. Potentially Divinity Original Sins depending on if you can enjoy it.

As for coming out the things to look at are Vampire Bloodlines 2 and Cyberpunk 2077.

> that while it has creative writing

Events happen in another galaxy.

Humanoids. Using guns and being on simillar tech level to the humanity. More humanoids that are being attacked by them...

Ancient tech left for the chosen ones.

"Creative" writing.

Helphaer 1

As in the lore and atmospheric story silly as well as the character development stories, and world building.

And they did not leave the tech for the chosen ones, they were to return at a later time to seed worlds once the scourge had been dealt with.

Adamarshall7 3

Red Dead Redemption 2 if you liked the R* vibe of GTA.

sully48 14

Outer Wilds

eltitotole 2

This. Amazing.

IcarusSupreme 6

Another vote for Outer Wilds

Also Disco Elysium and The Return of the Obra Dinn

The_Fluffy_Walrus 6

I see people recommend this every single day but I don't have the slightest idea what it's about.

Zyxos2 5

Don't look up anything.

wheresmymothvirginia 5

It's better if it stays that way. I went into it almost completely blind and it was an absolute blast. 90% of the fun is exploring, finding new things, and unraveling the mystery.

__andthen 1

I've been playing it since last week. I have visited all the planets so far but I still don't know what to do...
It feels overwhelming for me at times. No, I haven't searched every clue there is to search for but I just don't know how to go forward with it. I get stuck at times.

wheresmymothvirginia 2

It's okay to put it down for a while (or for good) if you're not feeling it. For me it was always "oh, but I haven't followed up this clue" or "what happens if I try this thing here?"

I got lucky a lot I think but I still had to look online to find out how to finish the game. No shame in needing a little help now and again.

Round_Banana 6

Nier Replicant and Automata

merlingbenjen 14

Disco Elysium

GotMyViewmaster 3

This is the best game from a storytelling perspective that I have ever experienced, in my 28 years of gaming. Just be ready to read a lot. In fact, be willing for most of the game to be a highly-engaging choose-your-own-adventure book with really engaging but fairly simple graphics. Didn't sound that appealing but on my last day of playing, I stayed up until 6:00 am playing, then woke up at 10:00 am to finish the game. So good.

merlingbenjen 1

Have your tried Planescape Torment? Before Disco a lot of people geberally agreed that it had the best writing in any video game.

Heard of Yakuza 0?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a must play

  anoopvk268 4

Red dead redemption works good on pc? Heard it's a port from console and there are some glitches. Is it similar to gta v ?

I will check yakuza

arex333 1

>Red dead redemption works good on pc? Heard it's a port from console and there are some glitches. Is it similar to gta v ?

It's pretty demanding so you should have a decent pc. It had problems on launch but I've played it well over 100 hours and it's great. Easily the best story in any video game I've played. It has similarities to gta but it's a very different pace and tone.

empathetical 2

I put 200hrs into it and had no problems. Ran great on an RTX 2060

vainsilver 6

RDR2 is not a console port at all. Not in the way you’re thinking at least. It’s immensely configurable graphically. Beyond anything that is possible with the console versions.

Major_Ethanolic 6

RDR2 had a lot of problems in the beginning, but all worked out. I waited a year to buy it (still playing it now) and no issues at all.

pdp10 4

RDR2 has been on desktop/PC for a year already?

Lavacop 5

Launched November 5th 2019, so no.

arex333 5

RDR2 is the pinnacle of gaming narrative right now

daaxwizeman 21

Bioshock, Mass Effect

Really, the Mass Effect series with its famous three color ending?

quack_quack_mofo 6

Up until that moment shit was/is awesome

deruss 16

Yes, the infamous Mass Effect series where 99% of the whole series is just brilliant, with the weird ending (tbh the real ending is the Citadel DLC anyway) and the 3 colors.

computerswow 2

Slothu 10

My name is Shepard and this is my favorite comment on the Citadel

interstellaris 15

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice - My Top 1 storytelling game

cuppa_Aus_tea 2

Highly, highly, recommend Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Get a good pair of headphones (or a good surround sound system) and it is a proper experience.

KawaiiPandaNekoDesu 9

I feel that the story from Metro are good.

Soma is probably my favorite.

RandomNona67 10

To the moon and Finding paradise

Confuciusz 27

Yakuza 0 and Sleeping Dogs are both pretty darn good.

rock1m1 4

Yakuza 0 is so good

Combatical 1

Would I like it if I hate anime? I know its a game and not anime but I really dislike the humor and "crazy" outbursts that comes along with this style.

jayrocs 1

I'm only interested in the mini games for Yakuza. How long do you have to play before these open up?

merlingbenjen 2

For real. I barely heard anything about the franchise when it got ported, now it's one of my favorites.
